8. New Zealand
Do you ever sit and wonder where your food came from while in the middle of eating a meal? Pay a visit to either the North or South Islands of New Zealand, so you don't have to continue to wonder. You can visit the many farms on the island so you can see exactly where the local food is sourced. Those on the islands have the opportunity to experience wildlife such as whale or bird watching. Even seeing animals the traditional way means you can visit ethically-run zoos.
7. Socotra, Yemen
Socotra consists of four islands in the Indian Ocean. Mostly inaccessible due to political turbulence and the fact that it’s not equipped for tourism, it's complicated to travel to the island. From the dolphins gliding along the coast to the span of dragon’s blood trees along the vast forest – it's a little sad that so few outsiders get to experience it, but lack of people keeps the environment thriving. Socotra is 83 miles long and has been ruled by Arabia, although it lies closer to Africa. Locals to the island are called Socotrans, and there are roughly 25,000 living there now.
6. Iceland
In the past years, Iceland proved more and more popular among tourists. Perhaps it’s the fact that so many other places in the world show signs of overpopulation and pollution while Iceland does the opposite. Many visit Iceland for their amazing outdoor landscapes from waterfalls to black-sand beaches, huge lagoons, and mountains. Their water sources count amongst some of the best, most pure water in the world. A lot of the activities offered here are eco-friendly, such as ice hiking.
5 - Papua New Guinea
Over 7 million people on the 180,000 square miles or 466, 200 square kilometers call the culturally diverse area of Papua New Guinea home. Despite this fact, it still counts as one of the least explored islands in the world – both geographically and culturally. Parts of the island are so untouched that there may be unidentified plants and animals and--quite possibly--uncontacted people. How exciting! The island comprises of 429 different varieties of coral and 269 species of birds. Jungle-clad mountains stretch out above, and fantastic sea life can lurk right below the water.
4 - Channel Islands, California
The Channel Islands are a throwback to a time when California was uninhabited and consists of eight islands in the Pacific Ocean. Besides being a beautiful natural island, this is also the first place in North America that scientists discovered archaeological evidence of a human being . Having one of the most impressive marine ecosystems in the world, the Channel Islands have many species of plants and animals that are unique to the islands. Officials plan many more efforts to conserve the islands’ endemic species.
3. Bird Island
Bird Island is located in the Seychelles archipelago and is known for its birds – hence the name. There are more than a million sooty terns that live on the island. The naturally beautiful island turned into a private resort with a small landing strip. Twenty-six bungalows sit on the beautiful beaches and there, guests are served sensational cuisine. The exceptional marine life consists of a large population of green turtles, whales, and dolphins. Deep sea fishing, snorkeling, and nature watching keep visitors busy and happy during their stays.
2. Madeira, Portugal
Deep in the middle of the Portuguese Island of Madeira lies the Madeira Laurisilva Forest. It’s the largest living area that still shows the original ecosystem. Such an ecosystem used to be found all over Europe. The island itself lies on the top of a massive volcano that rises to 20,000 feet. There are so many things to do on this beautiful island, such as nature watching, hiking and visiting the national park. The main resort on the island is Quinta Del Bela Vista, and the accommodations are beautiful and relaxing.
