Hattie Saltzman was diagnosed with diabetes at 16, and at age 19 her insulin co-pay went from $125 to $550 per month, forcing her at one point to ration her life-saving medicine and split it with her father, who also suffers from the disease. While the family found a way for her to qualify for her medicine by claiming that she’s an independent for tax purposes, Saltzman’s parents, Dianne and Russ Saltzman, worry about how she will afford her costs when she gets a job. Now, they’re urging people to contact their political leaders to reduce the costs. Megyn Kelly TODAY talks with the family as well as Dr. Melissa Sum, an endocrinologist at NYU Langone.
