In November 2023, Mr. Michael Parrott, JSOU Faculty, interviewed James Lawler (Ret.) a national security consultant and veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). James served as a member CIA’s Senior Intelligence Services for 25 years, as an operations officer, in various international posts and as the Chief of the Counterproliferation Division’s Special Activities Unit. Jim mastered the art of recruiting foreign spies and spent over half his career battling the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. He led the team responsible for taking down the A.Q. Khan nuclear proliferation network. In 2005, James retired from the agency and published two novels. The first was Living Lies: A Novel of the Iranian Nuclear Weapons Program. The second is In the Twinkling of an Eye: A novel of Biological Terror and Espionage, which provides the audience a brief segue into the world of spycraft and espionage. James discusses his experiences recruiting foreign assets to commit espionage and offers some recommendations for the next generation of intelligence professionals grappling with the contemporary threat environment.
