In the previous chapter, things were finally starting to feel more normal in the Hubermann house. Liesel continued to go to the mayor’s library where his wife would offer her “The Whistler” every time she went. Liesel also started picking up newspapers for Max to read every day and took up the habit of reading her books in the basement with him while he read his newspaper. Max sometimes quizzes her on words. One day, Liesel burst into the basement to tell Max about her soccer victory, but Max asked instead what the sky looked like. After hearing Liesel’s response, he painted a peculiar picture on the wall of Liesel and him walking on the cloud she had described. Towards the end of May, Max starts to really feel bored in the basement. He decides to start doing push-ups and sit-ups and likes to pass time imagining himself fighting Hitler. In June, Max, with the help of Rosa, Hans and Liesel, takes apart “Mein Kampf” and starts painting over each page with white paint, as he did with “The Standover Man.” He plans on writing a book called “The Word Shaker.” At the end of June, when Liesel is at the mayor’s library, Ilsa this time pleads the girl to take the book. Liesel, confused, agrees and takes it, but soon realizes it’s an apology gift when Ilsa cancels their laundry service. Liesel explodes on Ilsa, furious because she is their last client, and spits hurtful words on her. She ends up throwing the book back at the mayor’s wife. Later that night, Liesel tells Hans that she thinks she’s going to hell, but Hans confirms she’s not.
