Russian communists took to the streets of Moscow on Sunday to demand an end to the war in Chechnya.

There were echoes of the former Soviet Union as the protestors vented their anger on Boris Yeltsin.

Strains of the Soviet national anthem floated across the centre of Moscow.

Hundreds of mainly older Russian citizens came out to remember
the glory days - when the Soviet army conquered other territories, instead of fighting their own people.

Holding up banners that read "USSR - Peace in the Family of
Nations", the communist demonstrators made it clear who they blame for the break up of the country and for the war - Boris Yeltsin.

SOUNDBITE:
"We are not a country of bandits. The bandits are all those who are destroying the people and the country. Russians! Wake up and come to yourselves!"

These demonstrators had no need to rouse themselves from any
democratic slumber.

Their shouts could be heard streets away.

"We must stand firm behind our position. For the blood
of the people, Yeltsin's band must be judged for all that they have
done."

Many Russians are wondering what fate awaits their country over the next few days.

A series of protests and demonstrations is planned this week which are aimed to put further pressure on Boris Yeltsin to do something to end the Chechen crisis.

Yeltsin will have more than civil unrest on his hands in Moscow. On Wednesday a special session of the State Duma will convene to address the effectiveness of his government and his own competence as head of state.
