Summer was widely forecast to happen in the UK on 19th July 2016, with record temperatures forecast.

I booked a days holiday and arranged to pick Peter up in Glasgow at 7:30am. We arrived in Glenridding on the banks of Ullswater at 10am and after paying £4 parking using Pedros debit card [number recognition system - £4 gets you 24 hours] we were on the way.

Striding Edge was a lot of fun and the exposure is not unlike the Aonach Eagach in places, particularly near the end. There is a descent via a chimney that I found easy but a dutch lass was struggling. There is a fun rock scramble that, compared to Curved Ridge is a piece of pie and then an easy walk up to the massive summit plateau - trig point, big cairn and a cross shaped shelter. The views were to die for, all the way to the Irish sea and every other "Wainright" around. We even saw some A10 thunderbolts/warthogs practising as soon as we started the walk. We kept hoping to see them again alas not to happen. I was surprised that the height according to my GPS of Helvellyn was just under 3200 feet.

We descended via Swirral Edge which is exposed but the rock is all safe and good, only 300 feet of descent and then you are on the path down (aka motorway) all the way back to the carpark in Genridding. We spotted some folk swimming in the Red Tarn - great idea on the hottest day of the year.
