The Insane Engineering of the Douglas F3D Skyknight

The F3D achieved an impressive 6:1 kill ratio during the Korean War, establishing itself as the most successful naval aircraft in the conflict. As the world's first purpose-designed jet-powered night fighter, the Douglas F3D Skyknight represented a significant leap in aviation engineering when it entered service in 1951.

Specifically designed around the advanced Westinghouse AN/APQ-35 radar system, the F3D Skyknight could detect enemy aircraft up to 125 miles away. The aircraft featured a unique side-by-side seating arrangement for improved crew communication and was powered by twin Westinghouse J-34 engines producing 6,800 pounds of combined thrust. Furthermore, its combat radius of 500 nautical miles, service ceiling of 40,000 feet, and arsenal of four 20mm cannons made it a formidable presence in the skies.
