As we were getting ready to officially open our doors on Columbia Pike in early October 2023, we were excited to get to know the residents of Barcroft Apartments.

Our grant proposal, "We Are Barcroft: A 60 Acre History of People & Place," had just been awarded by the Arlington County Historical Preservation Fund that summer, which was to plan and develop a culturally specific arts-based community for the residents of Barcroft Apartments so they can engage in creative, community-building projects through documenting cultural heritage and sharing oral histories at Studio PAUSE.

Our first task was a series of "Gather and Greets"— community outreach events to introduce and engage residents with the project ideas, people, and partners. Importantly, we wanted to create an experience of respect, excitement, and belonging among the residents as they met the Studio PAUSE Community, made up of artists, writers, historians, poets, photographers, etc., and our partners like Gates Hudson, BU-GATA, Columbia Pike Documentary Project, and Columbia Pike Partnership, who were excited to be a part of this project.

It was the start—of showing up, creating a space, and sharing stories—that led to more engagement and interest in the project idea in the months ahead!
