(31 Dec 2019) A funeral was held in Baghdad on Tuesday for the fighters of an Iran-backed militia in Iraq, Kataeb Hezbollah, who had been killed in U.S. airstrikes on Sunday.
Prominent figures participated in the funeral, including Faleh al-Fayyadh, head of the Popular Mobilization Forces, an umbrella organization of Iraq's government-sanctioned militias, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, head of Kataeb Hezbollah.
Al-Fayyadh called the U.S. airstrikes "a blatant aggression and a violation of all values."
Moments later, dozens of Iraqi Shiite militiamen and their supporters broke into the U.S. embassy compound, breaking down the gate and setting fire to a reception area, angered over the deadly U.S. airstrikes.
On Sunday, U.S. forces killed 25 members of Kataeb Hezbollah in retaliation for last week's killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that they had blamed on the militia.
The developments represent a major downturn in Iraq-U.S. relations that could further undermine U.S. influence in the region and also weaken Washington's hand in its "maximum-pressure" policy against Iran.
