Errollyn Wallen (b. 1958) (Belize) has a song style that mixes classical art song with popular music styles. Often performed by the composer in a singer-songwriter style (with the composer accompanying herself on piano), vocal tonal options for these pieces merge toward those of contemporary popular song.
Wallen - 'renaissance woman of contemporary British music' (The Observer) - is as respected a singer-songwriter of pop influenced songs as she is a composer of contemporary new music. Communication is at the center of both worlds: engaging the audience, speaking directly to hearts and minds.
Born in Belize, Wallen gave up her training at the Dance Theater of Harlem, New York to study composition at the universities of London and Cambridge. She founded her own Ensemble X, and its motto ’We don’t break down barriers in music… we don’t see any’ reflects her genuine, free-spirited approach and eclectic musicianship. She has been commissioned by outstanding music institutions from the BBC to the Royal Opera House and performed her songs internationally.
In the 2021-2022 academic year, Wallen was awarded the Wort Residency at the University of Cambridge, England.
“Beehive,” as presented here, is a piano transcription/selection from the 1994 song cycle “Are You Worried About the Rising Cost of Funerals” for soprano and string quartet. “Beehive is couched in the biblical language of the sinners and the saved, set in a powerful gospel rhythm with swinging melodic embellishments.”

My Feet May Take a Little While (2006)
My feet may take a little while
To walk the way of my dreaming heart;
The more I walk, the more I breathe,
The more I breathe, the less I know.
There is a song that I was taught,
Of hills and streams and all
The hopes and fears of living things
Are written there in me.
My feet are slower than my heart,
Slower than my dreams, than my will.
I’ll walk a million miles,
I’ve walked a million miles of innocence.
My feet may take a little while
To walk the way of my dreaming heart;
The more I walk, the more I breathe,
The more I breathe, the less I know.
Jesus on a Train (2006)
Rolling hills go past this place I’m in,
Rolling land reminds me that I can
Fall from grace.
Half this world will eat their sandwiches —
So confident that life was and shall remain
So sure,
So sure.
The middle of the night finds him crying
And the stone is covered in blood,
Children huddle from bullets raining down
And so hungry.
And while you talk I see pain buried deep in your lips
And on your hand gold tells me
Nothing about love.
Still we’re sure,
So sure.
Ah, sure.
So sure.
Rolling hills go past this place I’m in,
Rolling land reminds me that I can
Fall from grace.
Rolling hills, rolling hills,
Rolling hills,
Yet we’re still so sure.
Rolling hills.
Beehive (Song of the Priest, the Pall-bearer and the Hanging Man) from Are You Worried About the Rising Cost of Funerals? (1994)
Oh, I’ve seen so much of that
Seen so much of that
That thing, that desperate thing
Those desperate tears
The wailing and the gnashing and the beating of breasts
The fighting and the clawing
But for me
That bee has no sting
Take me to that beautiful place
Drop me in the water
Curl my eyes into my toes
Take this lamb to slaughter
Pray for sinners everywhere
The hive is high
They’ve done so much of that
Done so much of that
That sin, that terrible sin
The sin of them all
The shirking and the lying and the staying out late
The fighting and the boozing and the stealing
And the cheating and the fornicating and the blasphemising
Oh Lord
That bee’s gonna, sure gonna
Sting
Take me to that beautiful place
Drop me in the water
Curl my eyes into my toes
Take this lamb to slaughter
Pray for sinners everywhere
There’s nowhere to hide
Take me to that beautiful place
Drop me in the water
Curl my eyes into my toes
Take this lamb to slaughter
Pray for sinners every day
The hive is high
Buzz goes the bee
Buzz goes the bee
Buzz goes the bee
But I’m strong enough
And I’m good enough not to be
Stung
By the…
Bee
Peace on Earth (2006)
And snow falls down on me.
Peace on earth.
The night is dark and soft.
Peace on earth.
The lights that sparkle in the square,
The smoke that lingers in the air.
Peace on earth.
And grace falls down on me.
Peace on earth.
The dark will turn aside.
Peace on earth.
The fires that burn in every hearth
Do sing our praise of season’s past.
Peace on earth.
Hear them singing.
Peace on earth.
