The Aral Sea, once one of the world’s largest inland bodies of water, stretched between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. For centuries it supported thriving fishing communities and provided a stable ecosystem in Central Asia. But in the 1960s, Soviet irrigation projects diverted the rivers that fed it—the Amu Darya and Syr Darya—toward vast cotton fields. Over the decades, the sea began to shrink at an alarming rate.

By the 1980s, the water level had dropped so drastically that ports lay abandoned and ships rusted on desert sands. Entire towns that once depended on fishing faced economic collapse. The climate of the region changed too: summers grew hotter, winters harsher, and dust storms carried salt and toxic chemicals from the exposed seabed into nearby villages, creating severe health problems.

Today, much of the Aral Sea has vanished, leaving behind barren land known as the Aralkum Desert. While some efforts have been made to restore parts of the northern sea with dams and water management, the southern portion remains largely lost. The drying of the Aral Sea is now considered one of the greatest man-made environmental disasters, a cautionary tale about unchecked resource exploitation and its irreversible consequences.
