India will continue importing crude oil from the cheapest and most reliable non-sanctioned sources, government officials told a parliamentary panel chaired by Shashi Tharoor, even as geopolitical tensions and trade talks with the U.S. remain in focus. Discussions led by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri covered the India-U.S interim trade deal, tariff changes and Russia-linked oil issues, with officials signalling that an interim agreement could be finalised soon while clarifying that India’s $500-billion import plan from the U.S. is only aspirational. The meeting comes amid global scrutiny over Russian crude purchases, new sourcing options from the U.S. and Venezuela, and sharp remarks from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accusing Washington of using sanctions and tariffs to influence India’s energy decisions.
