Yellowstone National Park’s Old Faithful geyser may be the center of attention, but it’s not the only water feature in the park. Just north of Old Faithful, in the Norris Geyser Basin, is Steamboat, the world’s largest active geyser. While Old Faithful can shoot a stream of boiling water more than 100 feet into the air, Steamboat can reach heights of more than 300 feet.

The problem is that Steamboat’s eruptions are notoriously unpredictable, and no one can predict when it will happen again—sometimes it takes months, sometimes it takes years. But now, three and a half years since its last major eruption, Steamboat is back, erupting three times in the past six weeks, reports Alex Horton at the Washington Post.
