Hagen is a mythic German epic fantasy that re-centers medieval legend around duty, repression, and tragic loyalty. Condensed from a six-episode series into a theatrical cut, the film follows Hagen von Tronje — a figure often portrayed as a villain — and reframes him as the emotional and moral backbone of a kingdom on the brink of change. With its lived-in castles, grounded combat, somber tone, and operatic score, Hagen favors atmosphere and character over spectacle and quips. In this review, I break down the film’s plot (spoiler-light), themes, performances, cinematography, production design, and music, while explaining why — despite its late-2024 release — I consider Hagen one of the standout films of 2025 and one of my personal favorites of the year.
