On a Tuesday morning in 1809, Robert E. Lee initiated an assault on John Brown's Harpers Ferry position, beginning with failed talks by Lt. J. E. B. Stuart. Lt. Greene's Marines quickly quelled Brown's forces using decisive force, incurring few losses within three minutes, and took the raiders prisoner, freeing hostages in the process. Lee meticulously pursued any hidden raiders, capturing most while some fled with abolitionist help.
