Your complete Leh travel guide, for first time visitors planning a Ladakh trip!

Few things to know before travelling to Ladakh -
1. Connecting flights from Delhi are available to Leh, I took one from Bangalore
2. Pre-paid sims do not work here. Post-paid networks which do work here are Jio, BSNL and Airtel
3. 2 days of acclimatisation has been made mandatory before you can head out to Nubra valley, Pangong Tso or Tso Moriri
4. Permits - Tourist permit in the form of environmental fees and Red Cross fee needs to be paid for going to places like Nubra valley, Pangong Tso. This can be done online, and the copy needs to be shown at check posts.
5. Getting Around Ladakh - For a Ladakh road trip, you can book a taxi at any of the tourist agencies at the Leh market, shared taxis are available to various parts of Ladakh from the Polo Grounds near the market. You can also rent Private taxis or bikes. Self-drive and renting of cars is not an option in Ladakh, unless you have your own car registered in your name or your parents name.
6. If you are planning a Ladakh bike trip, then you can rent bikes at Leh market. Outside bikes are not allowed, unless it is your own.

Exploring Leh -
This being my third trip to Leh, I wanted to explore more locally - visit places often overlooked by travellers as they spend their time acclimatising in Leh.

Places to visit in Leh
1. Leh Palace - Go all the way to the top for stunning views of the valley below
2. Namgyal Tsemo Monastery
3. Shanti Stupa

Off beat places to visit in Leh

Old Town - Situated just behind the main market is the Old Town of Leh.
Chutey Rantak - A quaint Baker's street, where Kashmiri bakers make bread in clay ovens.
Leh Market - The perfect place to visit as you acclimatise in Leh, before starting the rest of your journey in Ladakh. The Leh market has a lot of cafes and eateries, along with tourist agencies and bike rental to help you plan the rest of your trip in Ladakh.
Central Asian Museum - If you are interested to know more about the history of Ladakh and the role it played in the Central Asian Trade, then a visit to this museum is a must.
Gomang Stupa - A 9th century stupa which is surrounded by small chortens, located at Changsha.
