Ensuring access to safe, effective, and high-quality medicines has remained a major challenge in many low- and middle-income countries. While availability, affordability, accessibility, and acceptability were widely recognized in dimensions of access, the quality of medicines was often overlooked. This gap created serious risks for patients and health systems, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where substandard and falsified medical products continued to undermine trust, treatment outcomes, and public health.

This World Health Summit 2025 Global Health Lab session – co-hosted by the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Paris Global Health Institute at Université Paris Cité, and the WHS Academic Alliance – explored how countries could better identify, assess, and address the quality of medicines. The session was moderated by Xavier Jouven (Université Paris Cité). It examined the scale of the problem, gaps in surveillance and regulation, and opportunities to strengthen systems for ensuring medicine quality.

Speakers Bruk Alemayehu (USP), Yik Ying Teo (NUS), Marie Antignac (Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière), and Rutendo Kuwana (WHO) shared experiences from laboratory networks, public health research, hospital systems, and global regulation. They discussed innovative tools, regional collaboration, and policy approaches that could reduce the circulation of substandard and falsified products.

The session highlighted the importance of stronger regulatory capacity, better data, and coordinated international action to protect patients and ensure equitable access to high-quality medicines across Sub-Saharan Africa.
