Jasper is an intimate community that originated as a railway town that just happens to be in the middle of some of the most gorgeous protected wilderness in the world.

Jasper National Park
Before the Yellowhead Highway and Icefields Parkway started transporting people from around the world into the heart of the Canadian Rockies, before our beloved mountain town had even been dubbed ‘Jasper,’ this beautiful corner of the world was little more than a trading post surrounded by wilderness.

Located along the Athabasca River (the primary highway of the day), this post was established and managed by two of Canada’s fur trading heavyweights: Hudson’s Bay Company and North West Company. The town and park would eventually get their name from one of the post’s managers and voyageur, Jasper Haws.

At 11,228 square kilometres (4,335 square miles), Jasper National Park is also Canada's largest park in the Rocky Mountains.

Long before all that, the Athabasca River Valley was populated by Aboriginal people who hunted in the grassland meadows beneath the peaks. The cabins built later by local Métis families helped establish Jasper’s cabin-loving culture.

In 1907, the government protected the area as Jasper Forest Park, just as Canada’s second transcontinental rail line was set to pass through and foster the hamlet of Fitzhugh. The town grew, was renamed Jasper, and soon began welcoming tourists seeking adventure and beauty among the mountains.

From the valley’s first human residents to early mountaineering expeditions to modern reconnections with nature, Jasper has always welcomed those who wish to venture beyond.


Jasper, an alpine town in Canada’s Alberta province, is the commercial centre of Jasper National Park. Amid the snow-capped Canadian Rockies, the park has glacier-fed lakes, forests and rivers. The Jasper SkyTram climbs to the summit of Whistlers Mountain, with views of downtown. The Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives presents exhibits on the fur trade, railway and early exploration of the park.

Jasper, Alberta's history includes a number of key events, including:
Fur trade
The area was a trading post managed by the North West Company and Hudson's Bay Company. In 1813, the North West Company built a supply depot on Brule Lake, which was later named Jasper House after Jasper Hawes, a clerk at the post.
Railway
The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway established a divisional point at the future townsite in 1911, and named it Fitzhugh after a Grand Trunk vice president. The Canadian Northern Railway began service to its Jasper Park station in 1912.
Town growth
The townsite was surveyed in 1913 and renamed Jasper after the former fur trade post. The town grew and began welcoming tourists.
Jasper National Park
In 1907, the government established Jasper Forest Park, which was renamed Jasper National Park in 1930.
Icefields Parkway
The Icefields Parkway opened in 1940, connecting Jasper to Lake Louise and Banff in Banff National Park.
World Heritage site
Jasper is a World Heritage site with over 2 million visitors passing through the park gates each year.
