Ford Ranger 2.2TDCi Double Cab 4x4 XLS Auto Test Review

There are still many old-school petrolheads around who tend to scorn the latest and greatest technology in the world of motoring. This is even more apparent when it comes to bakkies and workhorses.
We recently had the old-school version of the ever popular Ford Ranger on test. I call it old -school because this version is fitted with the old 2.2L turbo diesel engine and the 6 speed automatic transmission.
Since the launch of this engine and transmission combination a few years ago, I have constantly commented on how well matched and smooth they are in combination. My opinion has still not changed, even with the advent of newer engines and 10 speed automatic options higher up in the range.
118kW and 385Nm are still more than adequate for everyday use and although I don't perform tests with loads, I am certain it will haul around a ton on the rear quite easily. Fuel economy in general use will be around 9-10L/ 100km which is quite acceptable in this market segment.
Although XLS trim is at the lower end of the range, the vehicle still comes equipped with most comfort items. Air-con, bluetooth (although the lack of an infotainment touchscreen is glaring) and comfortable cloth seats. 6 airbags are fitted for safety.
It is often stated that the best value for money is at the lower end of the range. If you are looking for a double cab to be used for work and not only for leisure purposes, then this could be a great choice.
Priced at R538 100 this includes a 6 year/ 90 000km service plan.
