People learn how to behave according to their gender roles when they are children and – as a result – men grow up with more opportunities, more decision-making power, and greater control over their lives than women do.


In Papua New Guinea, some customs and cultural norms can protect and support women while others can be harmful to women, according to lessons learned from documenting Gender Transformative Approaches (GETA) to development policy, action and practice.


The lessons are highlighted in this video about the partnerships between Pacific Women program and its partners – including local civil society organisations (CSOs), INGOs, academic and research institutions, and women human rights defenders – in Papua New Guinea.


The video shares eight key elements that can drive gender transformative change in development programming.


The 5-minute video accompanies a three-part Pacific Practice Note Series developed by Pacific Women’s Support Unit documenting learnings from many of its 182 partners over the life of the program.


The video joins the Gender Transformation in Practice (GETA) Pacific Practice Note and the report launched in August this year – Pacific Women Gender Transformative Change is possible in Papua New Guinea – to complete a ‘package of resources’ to drive change towards improved gender equality.
