The Winter Olympics went to China for the first time with the capital Beijing acted as the main setting for the Games, and there were held between 4 to 20 February 2022. At the event, Beijing became the first city in the world to have ever hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics, having been previously held the Summer Games in 2008.

Through 2012 and 2014, several cities had an interest to bid for the hosting rights of the 2022 Winter Games. Alongside Beijing, those other interested cities were Almaty (Kazakhstan), Kraków (Poland), Oslo (Norway), Munich (Germany), Stockholm (Sweden) and especially the Ukrainian city of Lviv. But as 2015 approached, several of the cities dropped out for numerous reasons, and these withdrawals left only two candidate cities to choose, with the IOC, during its 128th session at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 31 July 2015, picked Beijing over Almaty's bid by a 44-40 vote.

The Beijing Winter Games have featured 2,871 athletes from 91 nations compete in a record 109 events across 15 disciplines in seven sports, which include seven brand new medal events such as men's and women's big air freestyle, women's monobob, mixed team competitions in freestyle skiing aerials, ski jumping, and snowboard cross, and the mixed relay in short track speed skating.

Infamously, the 2022 Winter Games have been politically objected and are subject to various concerns and controversies throughout its build-up and even during the Olympics, as there were calls to boycott the Games over China's human rights record and especially regarding the Chinese government's treatment of ethnic Uighurs and other minority groups in the country's northwestern autonomous region of Xinjiang.

COVID-19 did play a major role in the Games. Just as the Summer Olympics held six months earlier in Tokyo, Japan, the then-ongoing pandemic has resulted in the implementation of health and safety protocols, and the Games were even taken place behind closed doors; some selected events were only open to invited guests at a reduced capacity. But however, many athletes, coaches, support staff, even high-level officials were deemed unable to attend the event.
