A typical evening performance of Javanese gamelan music could last for
many hours as there are large pieces and suites that are played in each
of the six pathets. However, due to time considerations the concert
this evening will present the pathet sléndro sanga through some short
pieces. A jineman is one such piece that is usually performed in
between large and serious compositions towards the middle of a
concert to lighten the mood. In an all-night shadow puppet play
performance, a jineman is often used as part of a comedic intermission
and as a way to showcase the skills of the singers.

A jineman is not usually performed by the whole gamelan, but rather the
soft elaborating instruments. Before the piece begins these instruments will
play a short pathetan to introduce the feeling of pathet sléndro sanga.
Afterwards, the singer will perform a short solo introduction, with
the drummer signaling the other instruments to enter and begin the piece.
The drummer plays lively and complex rhythms on the ciblon drum,
occasionally making the music come to an abrupt stop so that the singer
can sing a short solo before cuing the other instruments to enter again.

Uler Kambang is one of the more popular jinemans and is often performed in
concerts as well as shadow puppet plays.
