Children who are exposed to violence in the home are denied their right to a safe and stable home environment. Many are experiencing difficulty learning and limited social skills, exhibit violent, risky, or suffer from depression or severe anxiety. Others are suffering silently, and with little support.

In addition to all this problems, Children exposed to violence in the home are often called to face, as witness, to the justice system: an intimidating adult world which they cannot understand.

Adapting child-friendly justice is therefore necessary as not to further compromise the delicate psychological condition of children.

The Council of Europe has created various guidelines in the field of child-friendly justice. These standards claim that Child-friendly justice must be:
• accessible;
• age appropriate;
• speedy;
• adapted on the needs of the child;
• respecting the right to participate in and to understand the proceedings;
• respecting the right to privacy;
• respecting the right to integrity and dignity.

In all actions concerning children, the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration. For this reason, a psychologist have to monitor and support the child during all the justice procedure.

This psychologist has to acknowledge that his task is not only to evaluate the psychological credibility of the child witness’s testimony, but also to protect the child’s psychological well-being.

To improve justice system able to take into consideration to the specific needs of children is a key aspect to protect the psychophysical balance of children and help them overcome their traumas more quickly.
