In Malachi 1:2–3 and Romans 9:13 it says, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” This means God chose Jacob to receive the covenant blessings and the promises given to Abraham. Jacob was respected as the heir of Yahuah’s plan for Israel. Esau, by contrast, was rejected from that covenant role, which is expressed as God hating Esau.

Esau, though blessed in his own way, was not chosen for that covenant role. His life choices (selling his birthright, marrying outside the covenant people) reflected a disregard for Yahuah’s plan, while Jacob valued the inheritance, even if imperfectly.

It’s less about Yahuah showing favoritism and more about His sovereign purpose and Jacob’s heart being turned toward the things of Yahuah.
