Just as India–US ties seemed to be finding some footing again — with Trump’s birthday call to Modi setting a warmer tone and trade talks on tariffs finally back on track — Washington has thrown in a fresh curveball. The Trump administration has announced a staggering $100,000 application fee for all new H-1B visas. Given that Indians made up nearly 70% of H-1B beneficiaries last year, the move hits hardest at Indian professionals. The White House has since sought to soften the blow, clarifying that the fee is a one-time charge and will not affect existing visa holders.

Meanwhile, in Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi in a veiled dig to the US, urged India to embrace self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar), warning that dependence on foreign nations is the country’s biggest weakness.
