Quidditch was originally played without the snitch, but it was added as a prize in 1269 when the newly-appointed Chief of the Wizards' Council, Barberus Bragge, released one during a Quidditch match and offered 150 galleons to the winner. Before snitches were invented, they used a small magical bird called a Snidget. They eventually became an endangered species, so the golden snitch was invented!
