The film is titled Man of Tomorrow and is scheduled to release on July 9th, 2027. While fans expected a traditional Superman sequel, Gunn has already clarified this is not “Superman 2.” Instead, it appears to be something very different.

The biggest surprise comes from the teaser art, drawn by legendary comic artist Jim Lee. It shows David Corenswet’s Superman standing side-by-side with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor — not as enemies, but seemingly as allies. Superman even holds a screwdriver, hinting he may have helped build Lex’s iconic green and purple War Suit.

This raises huge questions. Why would Superman team up with his greatest enemy? Could Lex have been inspired by Superman’s speech in the previous film to actually do good? In the comics, Lex has temporarily worn the War Suit as a member of the Justice League, and at one point even positioned himself as Metropolis’ “Superman.” Gunn might be adapting one of these storylines, or perhaps reimagining Lex’s arc entirely.

It’s also worth noting Gunn previously teased that Superman plays a “major role,” but the movie isn’t necessarily about him. That means Man of Tomorrow could be told largely from Lex’s perspective, making this more of a Lex Luthor film than a Superman sequel.

Speculation about this project has been wild for months — with rumors of World’s Finest, Superman and The Authority, or even a Superman-Supergirl team-up. But with this announcement, it’s clear Gunn has something else in mind — and nobody knows exactly what yet.

What we do know is that both David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are confirmed to star, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and a stacked supporting cast. For now, fans are left to wonder why Superman and Lex Luthor would join forces, and what kind of story James Gunn is really planning for 2027.
