The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that the protective “New Safe Confinement” dome at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant — built to contain radioactive materials from the 1986 disaster — “lost its primary safety functions” after a drone strike in February 2025.
Although the strike damaged the outer cladding of the steel-concrete enclosure, the structural supports and radiation-monitoring systems remain intact, and radiation levels have stayed within safe limits.

IAEA says prompt repairs were carried out — but warns that complete restoration is essential to prevent long-term risks from further degradation.
