Financial expert Egon von Greyerz explains why the U.S. dollar hasn’t visibly collapsed, despite the massive problems facing the American financial and monetary system. With endless money printing, skyrocketing debt levels, and growing fiscal deficits, many wonder why the USD still appears strong. According to von Greyerz, this is the wrong question to ask. The dollar, like all fiat currencies, is already collapsing in real terms — especially when measured against gold.

Von Greyerz emphasizes that comparing the dollar to other weakening fiat currencies like the euro or yen gives a false sense of strength. He highlights that since 1971, when the U.S. abandoned the gold standard, all major currencies have lost around 99% of their value in gold terms. This slow and silent erosion of purchasing power is masked by the illusion of relative strength among fiat currencies. He warns that the remaining 1% decline will be the final blow to today’s monetary system, leading to a complete collapse in real value.

He urges investors to stop measuring wealth in paper currencies and instead assess their true financial position through the lens of gold — the only form of money that has preserved value throughout history. Gold exposes the real catastrophic fall of global currencies, not just the dollar. Von Greyerz concludes by advising individuals to protect themselves not from the minor fluctuations between fiat currencies, but from the long-term destruction of their real wealth.
