Samuel Scheidt (1587 - 1654) was a prolific composer for the keyboard who spent most of his life in Halle in Lower Saxony. Scheidt was a student of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. He is most famous for his monumental 1624 publication, the Tabulatura Nova - an enormous compendium of organ music, including alternatim sets on liturgical tunes, free works such as fugues and echo pieces, fantasias of incredible length, and pieces which employ double pedal. Scheidt's music is not played as frequently as many of the other Sweelinck school composers - while Scheidt was unquestionably a great master of counterpoint and organ music, his music is oft considered to be more understated and reserved than his contemporaries from further North, favoring contrapuntal clarity and tidy construction, perhaps more similar to the late renaissance style of Sweelinck, as opposed to more distinctively Northern styles such as the chorale fantasia, which are often exuberant and elaborate in character, instead favoring virtuosity and decidedly baroque ideals.
This praeludium can be sensibly played at a brisk tempo and with bold registration. It essentially comprises four short sections - a harmony-driven "Durezze e Ligature" section at the beginning, two sequences, both of which are very rhythmically active, and then a concluding section featuring some diminutions.
