Thirty years following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the state-making processes underway in the former republics are challenged by weak institutions, corruption, and complex relations with the Russian Federation, even as democratic progress continues. This panel adds to the discussion on state-making in the region by considering the impact of identity. It explores how contested and shifting identities have played a role in the state-making processes in Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus, focusing on the lived experiences of local populations. We bring together respected scholars of the region to discuss this important and timely issue.
