"Iridium" for Orchestra (2022) by Keane Southard.

Written for the Ink Still Wet Composer-Conductor Workshop (Georg Friedrich Haas-composer mentor, and Baldur Brönnimann-conducting mentor) at the Grafenegg Festival, Austria. Performed by the Tonkünstler Orchestra, conducted by the composer, on Sept. 4, 2022.

Program notes:

"Iridium" for Orchestra is the 2nd movement of my Symphony No. 2 "Metallic". It was written for the Ink Still Wet Composer-Conductor Workshop at the Grafenegg Festival in Austria. Originally part of my Piano Sonata No. 2, orchestration for this piece began in late 2021 and was completed in May 2022. Iridium is a very dense element in the platinum family of metals that is hard, brittle, shiny, and rare, which I think fits the character of this movement well.
