Oda revealed a huge secret about Bartholomew Kuma which just might unravel the biggest mysteries in the One Piece world: Who was JoyBoy and what happened during the Void Century?

We recently learned that Bartholomew Kuma belongs to a nearly extinct race of people called the Buccaneers and although Oda has only provided a few concrete details about their backstory, we can potentially uncover nearly everything there is to know about their pivotal role in One Piece world history based on their name alone.

The real-world buccaneers were a unique group of 17th century free sailors from the Caribbean turned privateers who helped initiate the Golden Age of Piracy. Both their history and their ideals could very well serve as the basis for JoyBoy, the mysterious figure who seemingly set the entire story of One Piece into motion over 800 years before Luffy first set sail. In fact, as we’ll explore later in the video, we may already have some pretty compelling evidence that JoyBoy was indeed a buccaneer. But proving JoyBoy’s race isn’t the main purpose of his theory video – as the real question is what knowing JoyBoy’s race might tell us about who he was and what the world looked like during his adventures.

While learning about JoyBoy’s race is fascinating enough in and of itself, even more importantly, the real world history of the buccaneers could help us solve the mystery of the Void Century – what happened to the Forgotten Kingdom? How did Imu rise to power? The real world history of the Buccaneers may reveal some surprising and unexpected connections between JoyBoy and Lord Imu which ultimately brought about the downfall of the Forgotten Kingdom.

Understanding JoyBoy’s greatest failure may allow us to learn from the lesson of history, and looking to the future, answer the question: how will Luffy and crew reawaken JoyBoy’s will in order to overcome Imu’s dark forces and deliver the world’s New Dawn?
