What are epigrams? And what is epigrammatic writing (in either poetry or prose)? The video provides an introduction to epigrammatism. I define & explain the meaning of the literary term ‘epigram’ in order to demonstrate what epigrammatic style might be, & I cite some famous epigram examples. The lecture is a brief history of some of English Literature’s best epigrammatists, using examples from Ben Jonson, Alexander Pope, Samuel Johnson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth (counterexample), Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, and the Roman poet Martial. I’ve chosen these epigram examples on the basis that I think they’re funny—I hope you think they’re funny (or at least amusing) too!
