Verse 3:7 tells us that there are two types of expressions in the Qur'an: Interpretable (Muhkam) and Uninterpretable (Mutashabih). Most of the Qur'an is interpretable and God/Allah has made sure that the interpretation environment is strongly structured (muhkam) by the way Allah uses language, by context, by word usage in different verses. A minority of verses are deliberately made uninterpretable (mutashabih) because they deal with issues that Allah does not want to explain such as matters of the spirit (ar-rooh) or secrets of what Allah is doing. Mutashabih means falsely resembling something we know. The term mutashabih (falsely resembling) was introduced and clearly defined in 2:25 referring to fruits of Paradise being only falsely resembling those of the Earth. Allegorical verses (parables, similitudes, amthal, plural of mathal) are part of muhkam (interpretable). They are symbolic but still interpretable. It is not appropriate to symbolically interpret verses that are not offered as symbolism or likeness. Many scholars mix up mutashabih with allegorical parables. Parables are symbolic muhkam, not mutashabih and we are ordered to interpret them and take lessons from them for our lives. Mutashabih is uninterpretable symbolism.
