Identifying a fake website isn’t too hard once you know what to look out for. Here are the 10 ways you can verify whether a website is real or fake.

1. It might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people fall for this trick. A criminal with a bit of tech savvy can publish a website that has a domain name with just a slight variant to whichever name they’re trying to copy. The phony website might even look just like the original.
2. Something that often comes hand-in-hand with assessing the domain name. If a website’s domain name starts with ‘HTTPS’, that means it’s secured with an SSL certificate. It’s a clear sign that the website is legitimate. If, however, you come across a site that starts with ‘HTTP’, you should probably reconsider entering it.
3. You’ve clicked on a site but something just feels…off. The design seems a bit choppy and unprofessional, some of the buttons don’t work and the branding seems not quite right. Be wary, you’ve just stumbled on a phony website.
4. While you might not know the name for them, if you’ve made any purchases online you’ve more than likely seen a security seal. You’ll usually find them on payment pages or displayed proudly somewhere on the website’s home page. It’s an indicator that the site can be trusted with your payment details. All you have to do to check if a security seal is real, is click on it. Any legitimate seal will take you straight to the company’s page.
5. Privacy policies are supposed to tell users how an organisation uses their data. When you come across a new website that you’re unsure is trustworthy, hunt for the privacy policy.
6. Getting confirmation of who actually owns a website would certainly help verify the legitimacy of it. Luckily, it’s quite simple to find out. There are a few websites out there that can provide this service. Just input the website URL and the person or organisation that owns the site will be shown to you.
7. Scheduling regular scans with an antivirus is a great way to stay on top of your cyber hygiene. After all, if you’ve accidentally stumbled on a fake website, you may have unwittingly downloaded some malware onto your device.
8. A 2021 report on web design statistics found that just under half of people who visit a website will leave if they can’t find any contact information. While this might not be an exact indicator that the website is phony, the fact that you can’t contact anyone if something goes wrong, or there isn’t a customer service helpline or email you can message, is pretty shady.
9. This is a great indicator of whether to trust a site or not. There are plenty of services out there that can provide insight into the legitimacy of a website. Trustpilot is a useful aggregate of user reviews, and Reddit can also provide some useful hands-on feedback.
10. Instant gratification is hard to resist, but the need for speedy service can often be a pitfall for inpatient users. Before entering your payment details, take a second to pay attention to the website.
