This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid versus the all-new Kia Sportage PHEV plug-in hybrid compact SUVs. The Kia Sportage plug-in hybrid has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an electric motor and a 13.8 kWh battery. It’s paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission and has a combined 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, 55 km/34 miles of EV range, standard AWD. The Toyota RAV4 Prime has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with Toyota’s hybrid system and an 18.1 kWh battery. It’s paired to an ECVT and has a combined 302 horsepower and 68 km/ 42 miles of EV range, standard AWD. There are some key differences between the two, the RAV4 Prime offers more EV range and power plus it also comes with a heat pump and a temporary spare tire, two features the Sportage doesn’t have. However, the Kia is priced lower than the RAV4 and offers more standard features including, a 12.3” touchscreen with Navigation, 4.2” instrument cluster, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, heated and ventilated front seats, quilted leatherette upholstery, a power driver and passenger seat, driver seat memory, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats and a power liftgate. In comparison, the Toyota RAV4 Prime base model gets an 8” touchscreen with wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a power driver’s seat, cloth upholstery, heated steering wheel and a 7” instrument cluster. Some of the other features standard on the Kia are either standard on the Prime top trim or optional in a package you can add to this trim. The Toyota RAV4 Prime gets a bit better fuel economy with combined city/highway rating of 2.5Le/100km, 94 MPGe and with the battery depleted 6L/100km, 38 MPG. The Kia Sportage PHEV a combined city/highway rating of 2.8Le/100km, 84 MPGe and with the battery depleted 6.7L/100km, 35 MPG combined. Check out the difference in pricing, the RAV4 Prime starts at $46,090 CAD/$40,300 USD, XSE $52,690 CAD/$43,625 USD, XSE + package $58,090 CAD. In the US, add packages between $815 - $5,345 USD to the top trim. The Kia Sportage PHEV starts at $44,995 CAD/$38,490 USD and the top trim $48,395 CAD/$42,990 USD.
