Garbage in, Garbage out

Garbage–The material that is discarded by humans, usually due to lack of its utility is called garbage. People generate a huge amount of waste on a daily basis. Garbage usually has pungent smell and a large amount of garbage may release harmful gases. Thus garbage should be thrown in the dustbins to take faraway places for discarding so as to keep our surroundings clean and healthy. Dealing with garbage Wastes generated by people have four main sources: DomesticThis is the waste generated by households, offices and schools etc. Thismay include substances like food remains, fruit and vegetable peel, clothing items, and used plastic items etc.Industrial wasteThese are the wastes from power plants, chemical plants, cement factories, food processing industries, textile industriesAll the industries produce wastes that are specific to the kind of industry they are a part of.Agricultural wasteThese are wastes produced by agricultural activities, adding of fertilizer and pesticide etc.Commercial wasteIt constitute of wastes like disposable plastic cutlery, food items, food packets, textiles etc. generated by commercial enterprises.All garbage is not useless and it can be recycled and reused. The municipality take the garbage to a low lying and open area known as a landfill. The garbage is then separated into two categoriesitems that can be used again items that cannot be used The discarded materials are spread over the landfill and covered with a blanket of soil.
The useful components are further classified into two categoriesBiodegradable wastesNon-biodegradable wastes. Biodegradable wastes–The wastes that are degraded
by the soil micro-organisms over a short period of time is called biodegradable wastes. Eg:eggshells, vegetable and fruit skin, tea leaves, waste food etc. This is usually not accompanied by a pungent smell. The mixture of soilcontaining deadand rotten organic materials can be used asmanureto provide nutrients to the plants.Composting–Theprocess of conversion of biodegradable waste into manure for plantsis called composting.Non-biodegradablewaste–Thewastesthatarenotdegradedbythesoilmicro-organisms or takes the mavery long period of time to degrade.Eg:metal scraps, plastics, glass etc.There is another category of non-biodegradable waste. It is known as electronic waste or e-waste that is composed of electrical appliances or components that no longer serve their specified function and are hence disposed away.These are non-biodegradable as no action by any microorganism is effective in breaking them down.Garbage should be processed by authorities and not burnt because burning of garbage releases toxic fumes which are harmful to the health of everybody.Vermicomposting Vermicomposting-The process by which red worms convert biodegradable waste into manure.A layer of sand or kitchen mesh is used as the base onwhich all types of biodegradable waste including dried leaves, husk, vegetable peels and remainsof fruit, dried animal excreta, etcis putted.A little water is sprinkled on this layer. Forpreparingthis mixture, put the red worms in it and coveritwith a layer of grass or a sheet of cloth.Red worms need to be fed as they do not have teeth.
