Leaked recording reveals Paetongtarn’s private talks with Hun Sen

A leaked voice recording, now viral online, reveals Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in a private phone call with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen discussing disputed border areas.

In the recording, which lasts about 10 minutes, Paetongtarn appears to criticise the Thai Army’s Region 2 command — responsible for handling recent tensions with Cambodia — saying the military’s actions “do not align with her government's intention.”

She also remarks that she does not want Hun Sen to follow the Army’s position too closely, as it could leave him “unsatisfied.”

On Wednesday, Paetongtarn held an urgent press conference, confirming the recording was from her conversation with Hun Sen.

She described it as part of “negotiation techniques” to help resolve the ongoing disputes and criticised the Cambodian leader for publicising a private conversation.

Thailand and Cambodia remain at odds over four disputed areas along their roughly 800-kilometre border. Phnom Penh is pushing to take the case to the International Court of Justice, while Bangkok prefers bilateral talks. The latest flashpoint stems from a May 28 clash near the Chong Bok area in Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province, which left one Cambodian soldier dead.
