How to Stop Co-sleeping with Your Toddler
If you're co sleeping with your 2, 3, 4 year old toddler and want to transition them into a toddler bed, then this video is for you. I'm gonna show you how to stop co-sleeping with your toddler and instead get them sleeping independently in their own bed and in their own room, happily.

There are seven steps to transitioning your toddler out of co-sleeping and into their own toddler bed. And the first step is you need to plan it. Ideally you want to separate out any big transitions that your little one is going through. So if you plan to start a new daycare if you have a new baby sibling on the way soon or if mom or dad is changing their work routine or work schedules then ideally you're not going to have your little one going through that transition, as well as transitioning out of co-sleeping.

Step 2 is communicate. You need to hype this up big time. Several days before you plan on transitioning out of co sleeping. Make sure you start hyping up the fact that your little boy or little girl gets to sleep in their own bed, a big boy bed or a big girl bed every night and how proud you are of them. What an amazing thing this is. So depending on your little one's adaptability you need to give them at least a few days to warm up to the idea. Make sure to communicate your little one in advance.

Step 3 is to set the scene. So this is where you get to transform your little one's bedroom into a fun and happy space that they actually want to spend time in. So start spending daytime sometime during the day with your little one reading books, doing puzzles, stories, cuddling, just having a really good time in their bedroom so they can start to associate it with like a fun and happy place not this random place in their house that they never go to. You can start to decorate their bedroom.

Step 4 is to move your little one's bedtime routine into their own bedroom. Now the idea here is we're subtly introducing a new sleep space to your little one without getting huge protests. We're taking baby steps with this transition. So this applies if your little one is falling asleep in your bed and sleeping there all night long. If your toddler already falls asleep in their own bed in their own bedroom this stuff doesn't really apply to you.

Step 5 is to camp out in your toddler's bedroom. Camping out for just a few nights is a great way to ease this transition or to warm your little one up to this transition without having you know big meltdowns. And it can also help us parents feel reassured that our toddler is okay in their own bedroom all night long. So the concept is pretty simple. At bedtime you're more than likely going to need to hang out and just linger at your little one's bedside so they can fall asleep if they wake up during the night. You may find that you just have to camp out on the floor for a night or two to get them to accept not being in your bed and not being in your bedroom.

Step 6 is to wean yourself out of the room. This step is really important because it helps you avoid getting stuck in your little one's bedroom for hours every night, for you know months on end. What we're doing here is we are weaning you out of your little one's bedroom. So at this point you're probably hanging out at bedtime for a little while to help your little one fall asleep. Maybe you're having to pop back in once or twice during the night to help your little ones stay in their bed or maybe you're actually camped out on their floor sleeping there all night long. So this is where we begin sleep training. Sleep training is the process of teaching your little one to happily and easily accept sleeping in their toddler bed, falling asleep there on their own and staying there all night long.

Step 7 is to stay consistent. Like with all things parenting related consistency is our best ally. So once you have made the decision to stop co-sleeping and to get your toddler sleeping in their own room all night long you have to stick with it. So once you decided to do this and begin sleep training it's really really crucial that you stay consistent. Your bed and your bedroom are now off the menu.
