He lost the last joint of the middle finger of his right hand while building a playhouse for his daughter and incorporated it into many of his on-screen performances.

He was beloved for defining the essence of good versus evil. On his grave in Hollywood Hills, California rests a small monument with an inscription that reads: "Lee Van Cleef. Best of the Bad. Love and Light."
