One day after Uber won a legal battle to continue operating in London for the next 18 months, it has emerged that the ride-sharing giant is reportedly seeking to grow its European footprint and is considering snapping up Free Now, the joint ride-hailing business owned by Daimler and BMW, sources told Bloomberg.22.7%. That’s how much Uber’s stock is up by this year. The app already operates in 10,000 cities across 70 countries. Despite Uber drawing back from some of its global holdings in major ride-hailing apps in Asia, Russia and Europe in recent years amid a competitive landscape, the reported consideration to buy Free Now presents and opportunity for the company to grow its European presence further, after London represents its biggest market in the continent. Free Now formerly operated as MyTaxi and now owns a series of ride-hailing firms across Europe including Beat, headquartered in Greece but popular in Latin America; Kapten (which has sought to compete with Uber in Europe), and Clever Taxi. Altogether, the firms operate across 130 cities across the world. Any such deal with Uber could also be a boost to Daimler and BMW, facing a corporate restructure because of the disruption of the pandemic. The joint Free Now venture is part of the firms’ bigger Your Now venture which holds five separate mobility ventures under its umbrella, and appears to be a bid for the carmaking giants to move beyond manufacturing, which is in decline, and into the more competitive ride-hailing market.
