Miles Davis was in the process of forming his first classic quintet when he did this recordings session. The six tracks were all recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's home studio on June 7, 1955, and released that December. The trumpeter is featured on a quartet outing with pianist Red Garland, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and drummer Philly Joe Jones, playing four standards plus a blues ("Green Haze") and "I Didn't," his answer to Thelonious Monk's "Well, You Needn't." Later that year, Miles formed his First Great Quintet, including Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums.

One of the most significant figures in jazz music, Miles Davis continuously re-invented his stylistic approach throughout his five-decade career, marking new epochs in the genre every few years; charting new musical directions and introducing other legendary figures at a rate that is unmatched by his contemporaries.
