Victoria’s riflebird (Ptiloris victoriae). One of three Australian Riflebirds, these birds are often located by their harsh call in the Rainforest canopy. The Males look black to the naked eye but when viewed through binoculars, the iridescent plumage is striking. The throat, rump and belly all have blue/ green feathers that change colour depending on the angle of the light. This serves the Males well as they attempt to attract the females in Spring. The Males perform a dance with their wings arched over their heads, often high up in the canopy. The bright Yellow gape seems to also feature in the courtship routine. The females and younger Males ( see clip 2 ) are much plainer with brown mantle and barred breast. Once the mating has taken place, the male is free to mate with other females and indeed does not take part on raising the young. These birds were filmed on the tablelands in Far North Queensland. This bird Video is part of my channel started in 2015. My ambition is to showcase 500 Australian bird species. I am passionate about Bird Video as it Potentially shows bird behaviour, breeding and often bird song.
I began birdwatching when I was 12 and progressed to bird photography and then to bird Video for the past 15 years.
Originally from the UK, I find birding in Australia exciting and engaging. I have now travelled around Australia twice but mainly film birds in Queensland.
Many of the bird clips are taken from hides or blinds that I construct from bush materials, saving the need to carry a hide to a location.
Knowing bird calls and song is a big part of finding each species and naturally, knowing the habitat requirements helps also.
