This set was recorded on Christmas Eve 1996. Evil B (also now known as B-Live247) and Speedee on the mic, Lix on the turntables.

I apologise for the interference at the start of the tape -- that's pirate radio for you. The tape also cuts out when it is flipped over at one point, right on a slamming moment too; always the way, huh?

It was a good vibe that night, with Mellow D, Plex, Hot Rox, Fugee, Gangsta Staff and others inside the studio.

Evil B and I were next door neighbours. We started out honing our DJ / MC skills in my bedroom, with him on the mic and me on the decks.

I got a spot on the radio first and then he came on as my MC. He was pretty much an instant hit and, as you know, he went on to become one of the top Garage MCs as B-live, and then rekindled his Jungle / Drum n' Bass career as Evil B later down the line.

Speedee deserves a solid mention here too. He was a staple feature on Rude Fm, and subsequently Ruud Awakening, back then and was one of the unsung heroes of the pirate radio scene. You could catch him at all hours, be it on the way back from a rave on Sunday morning at 4am or mid-week putting in a drive-home shift.

At this time the Rude FM management had split and Rude FM became Ruud Awakening. We didn't really know exactly what was going on behind the scenes but just got on with it none the less. The studio that night was at DJ Chillem's house. I can still visualise the flat.

I'll never forget this period of Rude FM because we had this horrible ghetto blaster for a system. It was loud but when the music was blurting out and the MC was going full on it was a nightmare to mix on because on the small speakers and poor quality (excuses, I know! :).

That was life back then: Cold, wet nights doing pirate radio at various spots around North London. Our biggest fear back then was the DTI knocking down the door....
