(30 May 2019) Acting US Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan said he was unaware of reports that the White House wanted to keep the USS John S. McCain out of President Donald Trump's sight during his recent visit to Japan.  
During a news conference in Jakarta on Thursday, Shanahan told reporters that the only ship he had moved was the USS Abraham Lincoln.
He said he needed to "find out a little bit more" before deciding if an investigation is needed in the matter.
As first reported Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal, a US Indo-Pacific Command official wrote an email to Navy and Air Force officials about Trump's arrival in Japan over Memorial Day weekend. It included instructions to keep the USS John McCain "out of sight," according to the email, which was obtained by the Journal and whose existence was confirmed to The Associated Press.
Shanahan met with Indonesia's Minister of Defence Ryamizard Ryacudu Thursday during his visit to Jakarta.
He said the two countries share common threats and opportunities, including their ability to address counterterrorism and improve maritime domain awareness.
