How to keep your solo from falling apart when a key change happens in the middle of the jam? I'm going to answer that question in this lesson.

We will be using a backing track that starts in A Dorian and then modulates to B Dorian.

The first thing you need to do in this kind of musical situations is to be aware of the note that does not work. That awareness is not always dictated by theory. Think about how that note makes you feel. If it gives you a weird feeling, it's probably a wrong note.

Second, in western music, a bad note is very close to a good note 99% of the time. That note that didn't work is either one fret below or one fret above a good note. Play that starting note, try to imagine how a half step above would sound and then sing it. Do the same thing a half step below.

To put this into practice follow the next plan. Create very simple lines so you can focus on the very last note you played. In that way, you will have time to anticipate the note you have to change when a modulation happens.

There are silences that are strategically placed so you can think about that note. Always ask yourself: is the last note I played going to work over the new chord?

Once you get comfortable with that, you can use the exact same concept to develop all kinds of lines as the process gets faster in your mind.

A lot of times we tend to focus on the scales and the patterns and forget to develop the inner musician part in our playing. Practice this aspect of your musicality and you will discover how your music becomes closer to who you are.
