RIP James Garner. James Garner (born James Scott Bumgarner; April 7, 1928 -- July 19, 2014) was an award-winning American film and television actor.

He starred in several television series spanning a career of more than five decades which included such popular roles as Bret Maverick in the 1950s western-comedy series, Maverick, and Jim Rockford in the 1970s detective drama, The Rockford Files.

James Garner, the film and television actor, has died at the age of 86. Garner was probably best known for playing the detective Jim Rockford in the 1970s TV series The Rockford Files, although he also excelled as the eponymous cardsharp Maverick in the 1950s / early 60s Western comedy series.

Twitter tributes have been pouring in, including this from the director Ron Howard, "RIP James Garner. Admired by all who knew James Garner. When starring in Grand Prix the people around F1 said he had the talent to be a pro driver" (Garner was a keen racing driver).
