Black Hephaestus is a dance work that was born when the Greek choreographer Konstantinos Mihos and the African paraplegic dancer Joseph Tebandeke met.
After a series of lock-downs due to the Covid 19 epidemic in both countries and the continuous cancellation of their appearance at the "Disability in Society" festival in December 2020, they decided to make an online dance from different parts of the world. Choreographer Konstantinos Michos and musician Giannis Despotakis (percussion, deep throat singing) in Athens and Joseph Tebandeke in Kampala, Uganda.

Inspired by African, Early Greek and Classical sculpture, they traverse the art history of the two continents to modern art, transforming its body, reflecting on the distance from the ideal body while reading texts from the anti-colonial wars.
"Black Athena" was a book by Martin Bernal in which he expressed the notion that ancient Greek culture was the result of great and decisive influences from Egypt, Africa as a whole and the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean (Phoenice etc). The dance work “Black Hephaestus” is not a theoretical answer to this theory, this is a work for the field of classical studies, but an artistic reaction that describes the encounter of an outcast, as a paraplegic is treated all over the world and from all cultures to all the centuries, with a musician who combines African tradition and modern Western music and 4 photographs of the temple of Hephaestus in Athens from the 19th and early 20th century.
