History Of Beaumanor

In the mid-19th century, William Railton designed the Grade II listed Beaumanor Hall near Loughborough, Leicestershire for the Herrick family. Built by George Bridgart in 1850, the hall was constructed on a site containing buildings from as early as the 14th century. In 1862, William Herrick married the much younger Sophia Christie and, along with William’s sister, the pair made their home in the hall until her passing in 1871 and his in 1876, after which his assets passed to Sophia and she remained in control of the estate until 1915.

In 1939, the War Office seized Beaumanor Hall and turned it into a top secret listening station, where encrypted enemy signals were intercepted. Furthermore, the premises housed training centres for civilians of the Post Office, Civil Service and Merchant Navy, and Royal Navy and Royal Air Force personnel.

Subsequently, after the War, the Hall was given back to the Herrick family, who sold off the estate’s assets in 1946. Then, the War Office reacquired the hall until it was finally bought by the Leicestershire County Council in the 1970s.

The Hauntings

In the main dining room, numerous inexplicable occurrences have been observed, including a plate flying off the table and crashing on the ground with no one present in the room. Additionally, the apparition of a coachman who hanged himself is believed to have been seen in the attic, and the sound of marching boots emanating from uninhabited areas.

In the dreary, dark attic, footsteps have been heard drawing closer. Similarly, a female spirit thought to be the wife of William Herrick has been spotted hovering around the grand staircase of Beaumanor Hall. Additionally, peculiar shadows and glimmers of light are believed to have been seen in the eerie cellar and ghostly scraping sounds heard on the stairs of the servants’ quarters.
